Stainless Steel CNC Machining
Stainless steel combines corrosion resistance, strength, and aesthetic appeal. We machine all common grades — from free-machining 303 to high-strength precipitation-hardened 17-4PH.
Alloy Grades & Properties
| Grade | Properties | Applications |
|---|---|---|
| 303 | Free-machining, good corrosion resistance | Fittings, fasteners, bushings, shafts |
| 304 | Excellent corrosion resistance, food-grade | Food equipment, medical, chemical processing |
| 316 / 316L | Superior corrosion resistance, marine-grade | Marine, pharmaceutical, surgical instruments |
| 17-4PH | High strength, precipitation hardenable (H900–H1150) | Aerospace shafts, valves, high-stress components |
| 440C | High hardness, wear-resistant | Bearings, cutlery, valve components |
Machining Tolerances
Standard ±0.05mm · Precision ±0.01mm · 17-4PH post-heat-treat grind to ±0.005mm
Surface Finishing Options
- Passivation (ASTM A967 / AMS 2700)
- Electropolishing
- Bead & glass bead blasting
- Mechanical polish (mirror finish)
- As-machined
Common Applications
- Medical instruments and implants
- Food processing equipment
- Marine and offshore components
- Valve and pump parts
- Aerospace fittings
DFM & Machining Tips
- 303 is easiest to machine — use for complex parts where corrosion resistance is needed
- 316 work-hardens — use consistent feeds and sharp tools
- 17-4PH: machine in Condition A, then heat treat to desired hardness
- Avoid interrupted cuts on 304/316 to prevent work hardening
Frequently Asked Questions
304 vs 316 — what is the difference?
316 contains molybdenum for superior corrosion resistance in marine and chloride environments. 304 is sufficient for most indoor and food-grade applications at lower cost.
Is passivation included?
Passivation per ASTM A967 is available on request. Standard for medical and marine stainless parts. Certificate of conformance provided.
Can you heat treat 17-4PH?
Yes — we machine in Condition A (annealed), then heat treat to H900, H1025, or H1150 per your specification. Re-grind critical surfaces post-treatment.
